Up Front (Not)

Up Front (Not)

What is it about pro football that breeds a need for secrecy that borders on paranoia?  “Transparency” is a term much ignored, if not downright despised.

The Bears put on a textbook display of “mum’s the word” in commenting on why starting inside linebacker Roquan Smith didn’t play Sunday against the Vikings.  Coach Matt Nagy would only say it was a “personal issue” while players pretty much performed a routine along the lines of see no evil/speak no evil/hear no evil, along with words of support.  Quoted in the Tribune today, linebacker Danny Trevathan also added a few words of criticism for the media.  Asked if he was concerned about Smith, Trevathan replied, “Probably not as concerned as you guys because you all keep asking questions.  I’m just here to work and have my guy’s back.”

Rumors be damned.  Accountability be damned.  It’s the NFL, where the only thing transparent is the need to keep a secret.
