Somebody stop Bears’ head coach
Matt Nagy before he opens up his mouth again.
Never mind, it’s too late.
Two weeks ago, Nagy was
reiterating his faith in quarterback Mitch Trubisky. As part of that (questionable) commitment,
Nagy said he wants Trubisky around in the offseason to study what has to be the
most complicated offensive system in all of football. Exactly when did the Bears hire Albert
Einstein as offensive coordinator? See
ball, hit ball. Hike ball, move ball to
the next first-down marker in under four plays.
Now, Nagy is going through some
sort of mea culpa moment. He was quoted in today’s Tribune (the paper
of record for all things Bears) saying there are a lot of challenges to being
successful, “And, I think for whatever reason last year, some of that for me as
a head coach got away from me.”
Yo, Coach, confession may be good
for the soul, but it courts disaster in professional sports. Coaches are hired, at least by franchises
that have a clue, with the expectation that they’re prepared and ready to
win. Once they admit to coming up short,
they risk being seen as fatally flawed.
Given the mood of Bears fans after last season, Nagy is adrift in the
south Pacific, blood all around his splashing body.
If he keeps it up, Coach is going
to talk himself out of a job, which, come to think of it, may not be a bad
thing.
