Been There, Done That
The White Sox went back to the longball yesterday in Detroit to beat the Tigers, 7-5, and sweep the three-game series. Drew Romo (!!) and Munetaka Murakami both hit two-runs shots with Miguel Vargas adding a solo blast to account for five runs. A groundout from Sam Antonacci and single by Colson Montgomery (!!) accounted for the other two runs.
Manager Vibes Venable continued his streak of knowing exactly what to do when with both pitching and hitting. Venable lifted Sean Burke after 4.1 innings due to the simple fact Burke—four runs on five hits and three walks—just didn’t have it. Hagen Smith and Sean Newcomb provided four spotless innings of relief (Huascar Brazoban gave up a run in .2 innings), with Newcomb picking up the save.
Venable’s other big move was to pinch-hit Randal Grichuk for Andrew Benintendi to start the sixth inning, the Sox down a run. Grichuk doubled to dead centerfield and scored on Montgomery’s hit. Talk about reading the situation correctly, and delivering accordingly. More please.
The sweep puts the Sox at 65-58, equaling their season high of seven games over .500. To improve on those numbers with three games at Wrigley would be satisfying, indeed. Venable keeps refusing to say that his team has made any statements lately. Trust me, two out of three from the North Siders would constitute one, regardless.
