The New York Times reported today on a study
about word recognition among very young children. Given the right environment, they can connect
words and things by eighteen months.
That would explain a
lot about Clare sitting on my lap watching baseball on TV. She picked up on “home run” and “hustle” for
sure. But “clown”? Well, my father was always fond of the word
to describe a certain kind of driver, and I doubt it skipped a generation.
