Do Tell

This is filler time for baseball-team websites, at least for those teams without the ghost of a chance to make the postseason in 2025. I think we can all agree that includes the White Sox. So, I really shouldn’t get upset at a story that ran last week, “Young White Sox promise to play ‘hungry.’” Still, it’s more than a little insulting. Am I to believe the team wasn’t hungry—whatever that means—last year? Are only young teams hungry? Then how do you explain 35-year old Freddie Freeman hitting four homeruns while driving in twelve runs against the Yankees in this last World Series? “Hungry” should be the default state of every ballplayer, all the time. If Scott Merkin wanted to do more than go through the motions, he should’ve written about players—and coaches—who weren’t.
