So,
here I am talking about extending softball to nine innings, and yesterday an
op-ed writer in the New York Times calls for lowering the basket in the
WNBA. He figures that would add a whole
lot of excitement.
Instead,
what I see is female athletes playing a game with a lower basket as well as a
smaller ball (28-1/2” in circumference vs. 29-1/2” for men). Why not go for the hat trick and shrink the
dimensions of the court? That way, it
could be like arena football, where you need a calculator to keep score.
I
guess it’s all a matter of perspective. Since
women athletes don’t have to play with their male counterparts, they can have
whatever rules and equipment they want.
But the world loves an underdog, someone who beats the favorite at his own
game. Where would we be without David
over Goliath? And don’t we need another?
