There
was a time when the White Sox specialized in acquiring over-the-hill sluggers;
think Walt Dropo, Rocky Colavito and Deron Johnson. Now, the Sox prefer to pick up one-foot-in-retirement
infielders like Omar Vizquel, Orlando Hudson and, as of yesterday, Jimmy Rollins. The 37-year old former NL MVP with the
Phillies was signed to a minor-league contract, meaning, of course, that he’ll
never play for AAA Charlotte. Either
Collins makes the team out of spring training, or he can go to AARP.
What
a wonderful vote of confidence for presumed starting shortstop Tyler Saladino,
that the team is willing to switch to Rollins the second he falters. It’s like that great philosopher Forrest Gump
once said, Stupid is as stupid does.
