Shades of Turner

Dallas Keuchel made his spring debut for the White Sox yesterday against the Brewers and immediately went into Jacob Turner mode—pitch poorly and try to talk it away. Keuchel gave up three runs on five hits and two walks, which would be pretty good over six innings, instead of 2-2/3. But, hey, ya gotta look at the bright side, the way Turner always did after a shelling. Keuchel told the Sun-Times “there were a lot of positives” to his outing, though he “should have been trying to corral that second inning” of work. “There was really no reason for me to kind of let it go like it did. But it’s spring training for everybody” and Keuchel says he feels “healthy,” he feels “good.” Lucas Giolito also made his spring debut for the Sox. The righty went three scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk; he also struck out four straight batters at one point. Compare and contrast outings, and, while you’re at it, wonder what the future holds for both starters. Spring training works as an excuse for only so long.
