The Miami
Marlins have announced a new logo and team colors, including the ever-popular
“Caliente Red” and “Miami Blue.” Be
still, my beating heart.
The Marlins are
rebranding because “We want to put our own mark on the organization,” in the
words of team chief executive officer Derek Jeter. You would think the new ownership group had
already done that with their January trade of outfielder Christian Yelich to
the Brewers. How often do you trade a
guy who goes on to win the MVP in his first season with his new team, Derek?
Oh, and the
Marlins also announced the creation of a standing-room-only section at Marlins
Park for reasons that are a mystery to me.
Miami drew all of 811,000 fans last season, worst in major-league
baseball. Maybe it’s for the players who
want to get out of town.
