If
you want to see what’s up with America, there are two places to check. The first is baseball, as in Jackie
Robinson. The second is the armed
forces, as in President Harry Truman’s desegregation of the military, occurring
fifteen months after Robinson broke the color line.
And
now we have First Lt. Shaye Haver and Capt. Kristen Griest, the first women
ever to make it through the Army’s Ranger School training program. Griest answered the question of lowered
standards this way: “No woman I know
wants to go to Ranger School if they change the standards, because then it
degrades” what the program stands for.
I’m
going to go out on a limb here and say there are probably just as many women who
feel the same way about playing professional baseball. I wonder if Haver and Griest would consider
trying out. I know a few teams way short
on talent right now.
